Great River Race – 20th September 2025
This is a 21.6 mile race up the River Thames (on an incoming tide) from Millwall to Ham, under 28 bridges. Many types of fixed-seat craft take part – gigs, skiffs, cutters, traineras, but all must have a passenger – which in effect for us means 7 rowers and some swapping around. It is a wonderful spectacle and the route takes in Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, the Wheel and then westwards past Hammersmith, Putney and under Richmond Bridge to the finish and beer tents of Ham. In 2024 300 boats took part – some crews race seriously, some crews wear fancy dress and give it a more party atmosphere! Bridport have taken part 3 times (2019, 2023, 2024) and have whittled down their best time to 2 hours 48 mins last year.
Costs: The entrance fee per crew member is higher than most – £75 pp in 2024. The majority of crew members need to be at Ham on the Friday, so that the gig can be craned into the river, rafted up, and towed overnight to the start at Millwall. The craneage and rafting fees add roughly another £25 pp. On top of this will be travel expenses and accommodation and food for the Friday night. Many people stay Saturday too.
